Guidelines for Effective Assessment

Faculty only have access to their own areas. Careful documentation of program, discipline, and course assessment work will help the college meet intended goals. In order to ensure consistency in documentation, the Instructional Assessment Council (IAC) requests that teams consider some general guidelines as they organize and meet, and provide documentation of the assessment process.

Guiding Principles

The guiding principles for assessing student learning:

Student learning outcomes assessment data will be used solely to improve practice and is not part of the faculty evaluation process, nor is it used to evaluate individual programs or students.
Sustainable practices promote a culture of inquiry, are manageable in terms of time and effort, and have adequate administrative support and resources.
Assessment is both structural and dynamic. Structure addresses a framework of public criteria and methods that are internally consistent and externally valid; dynamics address the needs for self-assessment and dialog within this structure to guide both individual and systemic improvement.
A direct focus on teaching and learning is ensured by emphasizing faculty-led, instruction-based evidence built on a foundation of scholarship in teaching and learning.
Assessment is improved when it aligns multiple means, measures, data sources, and analyses at multiple levels.

The American Association for Higher Education's (AAHE) 9 Principles of Good Practice for Assessing Student Learning are held as standards:

The assessment of student learning begins with educational values.

Assessment is most effective when it reflects an understanding of learning as multidimensional, integrated, and revealed in performance over time.
Assessment works best when the programs it seeks to improve have clear, explicitly stated purposes.
Assessment requires attention to outcomes but also and equally to the experiences that lead to those outcomes.
Assessment works best when it is ongoing, not episodic.
Assessment fosters wider improvement when representatives from across the educational community are involved.
Assessment makes a difference when it begins with issues of use and illuminates questions that people really care about.
Assessment is most likely to lead to improvement when it is part of a larger set of conditions that promote change.
Through assessment, educators meet responsibilities to students and to the public.
